The Engineering Department for the City of Morristown shoulders responsibility for land development, construction, and maintenance support activities throughout the

Department personnel include the City Engineer, a registered PE, the Storm Water Project Manager, two Engineering Technicians, and support staff. Parallel with the City Engineer is the Office of Wastewater Operations which is responsible for oversight of the contractor operated wastewater treatment plant and collection system, including industrial pretreatment. Aiding the Wastewater Operations Manager are the Construction Manager, two Engineering Technicians, and support staff.

Engineering design and construction of city facilities is done in-house by the Public Works Department or through various consultants. These projects include major and minor street improvements, sewer and drainage extensions and replacements, traffic control, groundwater remediation, recreational facilities and various structures including airplane hangars, concession and storage buildings, and the City Center.

The Engineering Department reviews all construction site plans for new subdivisions, businesses, and municipal construction for compliance with city regulations, standards and ordinances. Additionally, the Engineering Department shoulders responsibility for permitting and inspection under the TDEC MS4 Program and administers the Storm Water Impact Fee and mans the Storm Water Hotline and e-mail account.

The department communicates and coordinates with various state and federal agencies including EPA, TDOT and TDEC. The City Engineer serves as staff for the Morristown Planning Commission, the Industrial Board, and the Board of Zoning Appeals.
