Gary Chesney was born and raised in Kingsport. He moved to Morristown following graduation from Carson-Newman in 1973.
Chesney’s working career began with a job at Cherokee Mental Health Center. He later went on to be the news and sports director for WCRK and the general manager of Johnson Oil Co. He has worked in real estate and commercial insurance since 2000.
Chesney was a member of the Hamblen County Board of Education for 20 years and the Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors for 17 years. He has served on a variety of other boards including United Way, Rose Center and Parks and Recreation. He served as a City Council member for two years before being elected as mayor in 2015.
Chesney is married to his wife Sharon and has 2 daughters, 1 son, 2 step-sons and 2 grandchildren.
