The IT department is responsible for installing and maintaining the mobile data terminal network for the Morristown Police Department. The MDT's allow police officers to communicate with each other without using radios, through an internal e-mail system, and chat. It also allows them to access the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Tennessee Information Enforcement System (TIES) networks from inside their vehicle. The police officers can receive silent dispatches from the Hamblen County 911 computer aided dispatch software, and send messages to and from dispatchers. Also they can see the status of other police officers on the system.
Police Chief Roger Overholt has said about the system "At a time when there's not a lot of money to hire additional personnel, the mobile-data terminals allow us to better use existing resources to address the continuing demand".
