    Liberty Bell replica in Morristown

On July 4th 2005 several hundred people gathered in the plaza at city hall in the sweltering heat, to dedicate a replica of the Liberty Bell that has been presented to the citizens of the City of Morristown. The full size replica is part of the celebration for the 150th anniversary of the City of Morristown.

The Liberty Bell was a partnership between the Morristown City Council and the local chapter of the Sons of the Revolution, which purchased the $33,000 replica.

The event began with procession down First North Street led by a bagpiper, members of the 278th Regiment and the commanding general Tennessee National Guard, Major General Gus L. Hargett, Jr.

There was a youth choir, cloggers, civil war and revolutionary war soldiers, a 21 gun salute and a cannon.

Mayor Gary R. Johnson spoke at the event as well as Glen Greene, a disabled American veteran who fought in Korea and Vietnam. As did Terry Davenport, David Rutherford, Reece Sexton and Richard Carroll from the Society of the Sons of the Revolution, Robert McFarland Chapter.

The keynote speaker was Major General Hargett who said 'Today, a new generation of Americans are wearing the uniform and making us proud. Here, we gather to give thanks to them and to celebrate the 150th birthday of this city and the 229th birthday of this country. Not many people in the world would have bet on the success of the American people. It was but a small army of soldiers. Yet, it is a testament to the power of freedom. Freedom has the power to change the world'.

The ceremony concluded with the simultaneous ringing of the Liberty Bell with, local church bells and the original Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. All of the bells rang thirteen times.
