FORENSICS UNIT
A major component of the Morristown Police Department is the Forensics Unit. This team consists of 17 crime scene technicians and is overseen by Detective Travis Stansell. Four members of the team are graduates of the National Forensics Academy.
The Crime Scene Technicians are responsible for the processing of crime scenes throughout the city. Their duties include collecting evidence, crime scene photography, fingerprinting, and preserving evidence at a crime scene. Crime Scene Technicians are on call 24 hours a day.
Officer Ricky Sanders is the primary evidence controller with Detective Travis Stansell and Detective Sergeant Todd King serving as back up during his absence. Their jobs include storing, cataloging, and tracking all evidence turned into the Morristown Police Department. In addition, the evidence controller is responsible for taking evidence to the TBI crime laboratory in Knoxville and Nashville, TN for analysis. When the court case is resolved, the evidence controller is responsible for disposing the evidence per a court order signed by the District Attorney General’s office and a Criminal Court Judge. The evidence is returned to owner, incinerated, or sold at a public auction.
