Victim / Witness Program
The Victim / Witness Assistance Program of the Morristown Police Department was established in mid 1995. Since its beginning, the program has offered assistance to approximately 45 victims of crime each month. Currently the program is coordinated by Sgt. June Morrisette. Sgt. Morrisette attempts to make contact with all victims of crimes that are personal in nature (ie domestic violence, rape, robbery, etc). The type of assistance offered includes acting as a liason between the victim and the investigating officer, answering questions concerning the legal system, court preparation for officers in domestic violence cases, verifying court dates and making referrals to other community service agencies.
The Victim / Witness Program also works with the administrative and training divisions of the Morristown Police Department to ensure that officers are updated on any changes in the law concerning victim rights, and ensuring officers are properly trained in domestic violence.
In July of 1996, the Victim / Witness Program received federal funding from the STOP Violence Against Women Grant Program to purchase a computer tracking system. This system enables officers to track domestic violence offenders and their victims.
