Parks & Rec Hall of Fame Awards

On April 14th,  Morristown Parks & Recreation hosted their annual Hall of Fame Banquet. This event honors volunteers who have contributed greatly to recreation in Morristown.
This year, the Hall of Fame Awards were given to Jerry Grooms, Dana Wampler, and Richard Wilder.

Jerry Grooms has spent 20-plus years coaching you sports for the Morristown Parks and Recreation Department. He’s currently a basketball coach in the girls 15-16 year-old league, and this past season was his 15th year coaching in that league. He coached the Royals to a league title twice and has coached multiple league championship teams in basketball.

Dana Wampler has spent many years either coaching baseball or playing softball for the Morristown Parks and Recreation Department. He spent time as an assistant coach for the Astros in Minor League and Yankees in Little League before becoming the head coach of the Bulldogs in the Babe Ruth Prep League and Red Sox in Babe Ruth. He’s also spent 12 years as an AYSO soccer coach and coached three season of Little League basketball. In the early 1990s, he helped establish the first fall baseball league in Morristown.

Richard Wilder began coaching in the Parks and Recreation Department system in 1988 when he became head coach of the Reds in Little League. In 1990, he was the head coach of the Angels in Senior League, and he was head coach of both the Reds and Angels at the same time for three seasons. He later was an assistant coach for two years in the girls Big League for Dave Thomas, and they coached a state championship team that wound up finishing second in the regionals in Columbus, Georgia.

The guest speaker for this year's Hall of Fame banquet was Patrick Ashford, former Morristown West and UT football player. He spoke on having a positive impact in your community.

Thank you to our honorees for all their years of dedicated service to the Parks & Recreation Department and to the community.
