Community Development Block Grants

In 2003 the City of Morristown was designated a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and became an entitlement community eligible for federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. This funding has continued to impact and enhance our community.

CDBG funds have been used to address accessibility and safety issues within the Central Business District. For example, three non-ADA compliant overhead sidewalk ramps were removed during 2007. A new handicap accessible ramp was added at the west end of downtown, while new stairs were added along Cumberland Street. The “missing link” spanning an alley connecting Main Street to the parking areas was completed and several areas were updated to improve handicap accessibility as the sidewalk system is integrated into the City’s Greenway Master Plan.

Each year, entitlement communities must submit an annual Action Plan to HUD. The Action Plan is always made available to the public and two public hearings held on its contents. The Community Development Coordinator continues to apply for grants that will expand program opportunities in the coming years.
